Digipak draft 3

Here is my draft3 and final draft for are Digipak, which consist of all 4 panels complete in which we believe best fit what is conventional to are genre. In this draft we had did 2 shoot to get the images that we wanted for this, which we researched into are genre to find what is conventional and what would be most effective, through mise-en-scene and the types of media language conventions related to the indie rock genre.

Here we have asked other students in are class to look at are final draft and decide what genre they believes it looks like it belongs to. As we can see that majority of the students believed that are Digipak looked conventional to what it should look like so we have clearly demonstrated a accurate demonstration of are genre through components such as mise-en-scene, CLAMPS and media language.

A skill that we demonstrated in this draft was adding pages, which requires us to change the width and high of the page.

Another skill we learnt was bending the text around the stars head for the front cover. This made the front cover more dynamic and added another depth to are product, making it more interesting when the audiences sees it.

In are conventions check in, we believe that we meet the criteria for majority of these components but still fell a bit short on others. Such as key brand descriptors, that I believe could of been demonstrated more clearly. But we made lots of progress forward from are last draft as we have changes most to green as be feel that are product conveys these components well.

Overall with creating this Digipak, it required lots of preparation and research into what we should create which stays conventional to are brand and genre. This research was looking into previous albums in are genre and breaking down conventions such as typeface, colour pallet and types of imagery. This gave us the foundations to create are products in are own way but keeping it identifiable to what the audience should be expecting.

Digipak Draft 2

Here is are 2 draft for are Digipak which consists of all 4 panels, are front cover, 2 middle panels and the back cover. In this draft we receive feedback from are teacher, in which they told us what we can focus moving forward with to improve are product. This will help improve are product as it will give us another perspective in are work which we may have not seen, which will help improve are work. Below I have attached the video from are teacher and the feedback to improve are work moving forward.

Here is a technical skill that we used in this draft that we used to make it more effective, such as how we played with the colouring of are images to make it more vibrant and discoloured.

Here also shows how we cropped are image to displace the words, creating an effective image.

Here are the target for are next draft-

  1. The album name and artist font is the same – change them
  2. Play with the vibrancy
  3. Add spines and barcode

I have also below complete the conventions check list below which shows how well we have met the criteria for each conventional technique seen in all Digipaks.

We understood though this that are digipak was missing a spine but next draft we will have added and complete this technique to make are digipak better. We also understood that it wasn’t very conventional towards are genre, so moving forward we know we need to change are imagery or colour palette to make it more identifiable as a indie rock album. We also didn’t add a barcode in this draft so for draft 3 we know we need to add these conventions to make it identifiable as an album. Overall this draft has allowed us to improve on are first draft, but also highlight what we can do better moving forward, though self assessment in the convention check in and are teacher reviewing are work to help improve it.

Digipak Draft 1

Here we have created are first draft for are Digi pack, we have drafted are first concept, despite not having done are photo shoot yet. We have fill it with images which we believe is conventional and will fill in before we get the actual images we want. To have a complete Digi pack we need to meet a criteria of elements to make it conventional and identifiable as a Digi pack. It will need to consist of having the album name which needs to stand out, the name of the artist on the front. On the back it needs to have the track list of the songs, the barcode and the copywrite. We to makes this technical conventions genre specific to what we are trying to represent, which is the indie genre. This genre allows for a lot of creativity so we researched into Digi packs made by indie artist for inspiration and guidance. We found that they mood and tone is quite dark and mysterious so we will try and portray this style whilst making it unique so the audience can differentiate are Digi pack to the rest.

A technical skill that we used to changing the stroke on the title to make it more bold and stand out more.

A technical skill that I have done in this draft is slanting the title text in line with landscape. This makes the title more appealing and engaging when the audience see it. Another technical skill that we did was having fonts relevant to my genre, which is indie rock. In this genre the stylistic approach is very bold and artistic so we use a font that represents this style whilst making it unique to us.

Here I have filled in the conventions check list for are Digi pack which illustrates and highlight the level of effectiveness we have achieved on technical conventions such as the ones I listed above. This has allowed to to understand that are Digi pack lacks genre related images, and to add more images in the frames. It also shows that we haven’t added the spine on the Digi pack, we haven’t added the publisher tag or added the 4 different panels.

This first draft has allowed me to identify what I need to do next draft to make it better. I will need to uses convention techniques such as mise-en-scene relevant to are genre, and make a conventional costume for are star to wear and be in a setting which conveys the same idea we are trying to present. If we don’t make this Digi pack fit the conventions, the audience may reject the media and not interact with it.

Evaluation of Shoot 1 Contact Sheets/or Graphic Design – Digipak Draft 1

This is the contact sheets from are most recent shoot for are Digipak. When doing this shoot we tried to consider different aspect such as costume and type of shot, we tried to keep the digipak conventional to the style we are doing with are social media page, which is very simple, but authentic. This representation of are star creates a relatable vibe that allows are audience to connect with him, and considering are audiences demographic which would be mostly teens to adults, this representation is more relatable and desirable for their consumption compared to if we made him a super star that is un relatable to a normal person. Below we have pick 2 images which we believe would be most effective for are approach.

We pick this image as one of are favourites because we feel his emotion is very sombre and emotionless, which suites are vibe.  His pose is very simplistic but expresses his loneliness through his being around different pictures that show people having fun in the pictures. This image would be very effective for what we are trying to convey which are audience would be able to decode as it is conventional within are genre.

We believed that this image would also be considered for are front cover because it has the same effect that the previous image had. His emotion is very reserved and restricted giving the same effect, this stay traditional within are genre as their is Digipak covers that have similar styled imagery.

In conclusion, we have deduced which images we believe will be most effective to consider for are Digipak front cover. Us researching within the indie rock genre allowed us to keep are ideas typical towards the genre but given us the creativity to understand how we can differentiate are product compared to the rest. Moving forward, we need to now create the rest of the Digipak in the same stylistic approach we had with this to keep a theme throughout the whole product.

Digipak PMA and Risk Assessment

Here is are production meeting agenda for our digipak shoot. This contains when, where and how are shoot will be of. It also shows what types of shot we will be trying to achieve, which is a shot from above, but we also want to have are star covered around pictures to a more depth and make it more interesting. As it says the costume will be consisting of the star wearing blue jeans and a white tee-shirt, I wanted this outfit is be simple but effective. This PMA also holds people accountable to bring each resource to make sure that the shoot will be effective.

We don’t need to complete the risk assessment as this shoot will be completed in the premises of sixth form, in the studio and will be supervised by are teachers.

Completing this task has allowed us to polish and refine are idea for what we will be trying to do for are digipak, it has allowed us pick what are outfit will be like, what type of shot we want whilst holding each member accountable to make sure this shoot will be most productive.

Digipack mock up

Here I have developed upon my idea and research on my digipack and my particular genre. I have created my own concept of how I would want my digipack to look like, I have worked on my concept through looking at other artist in my genre’s previous digipacks, this is through the conventions such as colour pallet, typeface and imagery.

For my front cover my concept is a man on hid bed and on the walls around his are covered with pictures of pictures with his old friends. This idea is a symbolic code (Barthess) for how he reflects on his old friendships and how he doesn’t have them anymore. The colour pallet will be gritty, brown and white, this will be a theme through the digipack as the repertoire of elements is conventional in my genre and I believe that it will suit my mise-en-scene. My idea has be developed from digipack  that already exist, to make this unique to me I will put my own still on it such as the image concept relating to my music video.

My back cover will be a picture of a old vintage table, with the floor covered in scrunched up paper, On the table there is ripped up paper that says the track list. This signifies how scruffy and rushed it is and shows the homemade and individual style. The ripped up paper that has the track list is a semic code (Barthess) for his individual style and represents he is not in the best mental state. The colour scheme matches the theme of the front as it will be vintage in a brown and white pallet, this aesthetic is seen as conventional to my genre.

The process of creating my own digipack has allowed my to create a theme though the research I had done, in looking at previous digipacks in my genre and analysing how conventions vairy to my genre. I have used techniques that inspired me, but to make mine different to the other digipacks to create my USP, by making mine unique to incentives the audience to buy mine as it is different to the others. Now moving forward with my future ideas I now know what will look good as suit my genre so if I need to make a new idea, I will understand what will work.

Digipack Conventions Analysis

Here is have explored the technical conventions into making a digipack, this is through the key conventions that all digipacks should have such as spine, cover image/graphic and a track list. Also having to identify the conventions specific to your genre, my is indie rock and this genre is independent in the fact it doesn’t have many specific rules into making a cover, the digipack I have analysed is OK computer by Radiohead.

The main blueprint that is in all digipack such as this one is a repertoire of elements, this means there is a colour pallet that links the digipack together, whilst following the conventions to indie rock. Conventional it would consist of an abstract image and have a symbolic code (Barthess), such as how this particular colour pallet connotes numbness and disconnection. Other conventions that you will se in a digipack are barcodes and album and artist names somewhere on it. For example this album consists of distorted images which signifies (De Saussure) illusion and entrapment.

This research has allowed me to understand what a digipack should generally look like and what conventional techniques go into all types. The deeper exploration into the indie rock genre allowed me to see what is common within this genre and what I will try to replicate to fit my brand. Seeing different digipacks allow me to take different techniques to make my version specific to myself, this will create my USP as it will be different to the rest but still consist of the regular conventions.

THE BRAND

Here is a padlet which describes how we will present our star model and the brand we are creating around them. Creating a brand around the star through other media platforms allows us to make a image that gives the audience something to follow. we have added related pictures that we want to portray ourself and describes how they are effective and how they covey the image we want.

Made with Padlet

Within all our work we have tried to create a complete star image, presenting him as a ordinary man that goes through hard time, compared to other star images that are seen as perfect and problem less. This creates our USP as the star is relatable and the star image (Dyer) gives a personal relationship between the fans and artist. The mise-en-scene we are trying to create is conventional to our genre meaning its conventional to our genre but we make the star unique in other ways to give people a reason to pick them over the competition.
